Servicemagic.com

I am not in the habit of endorsing contractors or contractor referral services, but I do like to make the public aware that they exist. I recently had a problem with a garbage disposal and contacted servicemagic.com. They responded with the names of three contractors in my area and I could read reviews of their services online. At least one or two called me right away. As it happens, I solved the problem myself, but I was impressed by how organized and efficient they are.

A potential client had a similar experience with servicemagic when looking for aluminum siding and roofing contractors. They responded quickly and he was pleased with the service. I am going to follow their website and review their advice from time to time, but so far, I am happy to report that customers have been satisfied.

You should still be very careful about who you hire using this service. My client recently took a $200,000 award against an incompetent builder. While searching for assets to seize or garnish, I note that this builder was recently "endorsed" by ServiceMagic.

As home owners, we are the GC for our new home. It has been a nightmare to date. Unfortunately, we hired a relative to do the framing. He was provided a construction schedule to assist in keeping him on track. I wanted to fire him right away when I saw what his crew consisted of...1 college graduate and 2 teenagers, but we had already given him an advance of $7500.00. He would show up at 9 or 10 in the morning and leave at noon or by 3 pm. We are now way behind schedule and the framing is still not done. He put felt paper on the roof to prepare for shingles Sept 12 and 10 days later all the paper had ripped away and still no shingles. We fired him when he could not give us a date when the roof would be shingled. We also noted that all the header systems for the doors and windows are wrong as well as the rough openings. I don't know what he used for guidance, but it could not have been the blue prints. He has recently filed a mechanics lien against us to receive the final payment of $5000.00. I say we should not pay because the framing is not done and there are too many mistakes, plus, we did a lot of the work ourselves in an attempt to keep the construction process on schedule. Were we wrong?

I just wanted to say servicemagic is a scam. I hired a guy thinking I was getting their "10 point background check" turns out the guy is a convicted felon (beat an officer in the face with a shovel, beat up his wife on and on and on) he was not insured, not licensed, nothing. Even giving servicemagic this info they allow him to be on their site!

Watch out for servicemagic.com. Sometimes, they send adequate contractors. But as often they send persons whose "ratings" seem good and once you hire you're in trouble. Not only are ratings usually a small sample size, but servicemagic.com doesn't always post the negative ratings. And if a contractor is so bad that they are taken off the system, the good ratings are up until that decision is made. I hired someone for a $4000 eight-day (contractor's promise) painting and floor refinishing job of my office, and it was over three months before the contractor was out of my space, having never finished and permanently damaged my floors. Then I got quotes of $2000 and $1600 from yet additional servicemagic.com referrals to redo the ruined floors and finish the painting (total of $3600). And servicemagic.com's terms make them totally non-responsible as a mere "advertising agency" for the contractor that screws up. SM's conflict of interest? They charge $30-$40 to the contractor each time the contractor's name is given to a customer (whether they are hired or not, so it pays to keep bad contractors in the system for as long as they are willing to pay for leads). Quite a racket. Their customer service department has calm, sympathetic people who apologize sincerely but have no leverage whatsoever over the offending contractors.

If you want great work at an affordable price and you live in the Hampton roads Va area, we are a class A builder and competent in all aspects of building homes. I'm thier painter, just finished a $350,000 home, it's gorgeous. We do "Cost Plus" contracting with a chain of command for immediate attention to any problems that may arise. Even minor problems are stomped out quick, and we promise to be timely, ethical and reliable. We had a problem with a leak in a roof once that damaged a floor. They had it fixed and installed a new floor within 2 weeks and then didn't charge the customer a dime. Visit sturdevantexpressions.com. Sincerly...Jason Painting Div. Manager.

All of these ratings are unreliable since they are just a sampling of customers or the negative comments have been edited out. The best thing you can do is post work you need done on a site like Workpost.com. Once you have a few contractors to choose from you can solicit bids and make an educated decision. That's the best way to find the right contractor and feel good about your decision heading in. Workpost.com is a new one, but could be a great addition once it gets more users!

ServiceMagic referred one plumber who was not licensed and who pestered me to let him do the part of the plumbing job that did not require a licensed plumber. Another referral was suspended and put on probation by the local department of buildings; as if that weren't bad enough, their expertise was not in the work I wanted done anyway. Do not trust ServiceMagic--do your own research on the backgrounds of anyone you want to hire.

sales man david reed claims to be able to hook your website for your business to hundreds of other pages and sites and promises that your website will be directly linked to service magics site free of charge as soon as you sign on. They list only the benificial ratings of companies, and through 'direct match' wash there hands of bogus leads. Before you sign up for the service it is promised that they filter leads both coming in and also going to the contractors. Once your signed on they then claim its just advertizing. Fraud comes to mind. they claim they do checking and research for licenses in the areas you wish to serve, false claim and to prove it I was able to add Iowa for my line of work who requires contractor licenses for the state, but I wasnt able to add minnesota who does not require any licensing for my line of work. they offer there so called services in all 50 states of the United States, the goods or promises they make are vigerious 10 point screening. (more like 3 point screening) What they call a Ten point inspection turns out to be a check for insurance to make it look good and a check on the contractors routing number along with the account numbers. Another false thing they do is tell you leads are direct match, but in fact they sent that same $30 to $60 lead to roughly 3 customers on average, equals about $180 per lead for them, and a pist off customer that go's with someone else completely do to being bombed with calls. Injury to my bank account and my reputation is on the line for buying into there sales pitch, empty fraudualant promises. This company is immoral, unethical, oppressive, unscrupulous; and substantially can injure consumers and contractors alike by mismatching professionals the consumer believes to be qualified, contractor that is slow on work that is having a rough time, by being mismatch and potentially runing there reputations. End result, out of work contractor that may have been legit for there origanal field, an unhappy customer that has to pay more a second tine to have work done twice, and the people that run ServiceMagic a few dollars richer off this miss fortion of others. They fail to disclose material fact at the time of sale of profiles to the consumers who later in the system are the contractors, also to the home owner slash consumer that hires these screaned professionals. they also speak against other lead companies saying how they can't do anything for anyone, (Product disparagement). The whole things built in bad faith.

Hello I have been on a number of websites, to see what kind of negative and positive feedback that is out there about servicemagic.com. I have worked with servicemagic for along time, and i have seen both the contractor and the consumer side. I personally speak to about 800 people a week that have used our service and about 90% are happy with our service and our contractors. I know that in the world of home improvment there are shady contractors that are screwing people out of there hard earned money, then there are consumers that are screwing contractors, expecting hard work for little money. its hard cause cause at servicemagic we have two consumers the contractor and the homeowner. We try our best to make both sides happy, I will say to the contractors that we do try to call every lead before we submit a request. and make sure that homeowners are ready to get bids on whatever the request is for before we send the information. to the consumer I will say that when a request comes thru our system we do our best to make sure the companies are insured and are licensed for whatever state.we do a crimanal backround check on all of our contractors most general contractors "sub" out the work. some contractors do there own backround checks and some dont.thats why i always tell a consumer to do reasearch on who the general contractor hires to do "Sub" work. and before you hire anyone make them show you a copy of there insurence and if the state requires see the license as well. we are a growing company and we are making improvments everyday to make the consumer and the contractors that use us happy. we have about 800 people that work for us total, to service over 50,000 contractors and millions of homeowners.
like the last commentor i also work at ServiceMagic and am about to lose my job because they send so many sales\back to me because of technicalities. These technicalities are legal loopholes that SM doesn't want attorneys or their constituents to have access to so they send almost half of my sales back to me. I am not making as much money as a salesman as they bragged about. They have changed their compensation plan to their sales staff to save them thousands of dollars. They don't listen to me as an employee at all. My feedback or feelings don't matter. I will say this i have had many of my enrollees get work on their first lead but around 30% of the contractors that i have enrolled in my first year have cancelleda and many of them were very stable, good companies so if the service is so good then why are these big companies who stand to gain more with SM leads quit???

I signed up for service magic but truly didn't feel comfortable about this business. I didn't like the idea that they paid themselves once a week out of my account. I understood the leads weren't guaranteed. But, what I didn't understand was what they considered a dead lead.I have been in business along time and haven't needed any referral program, but the economy has changed To do business you need to market yourself .I felt they were getting business at our expense. I stopped my credit card and figure I lost 99.00 and learned a lesson.

This are all good points. It seems that both sides, homeowner and contractor, it is not a perfect system. I have recently signed up as a Architect, and then started looking at reviews (wrong order!) From the contractor/ designer point of view, I read that most of the leads are just wishy-washy people looking for free info. In your post you said, "At least one or two called me right away. As it happens, I solved the problem myself..." - see right there, you cost the contractors $152.00, and made SM $152.00 when you weren't a real lead. No offense, I know it is no skin off your back to call, but if this was a perfect system, you wouldn't use SM until you really needed help. SM needs to refund/credit back "leads" like this for this to be fair to everyone.

servicemagic.com is a waste of your money and a waste of your time, they claim to have your company at the top of the list on all major search engines, wrong there company name is at the top your name is inside there website, just contact google or ask.com or any other major seach engine and ask how much it is to get your name at the top, I bet its cheaper than using this company, they claim to have values, no such thing there, they just want your money and if your a home owner they teach or tell their contractors to call you more than once, dont they know people have jobs and need to make a living, stop calling and emailing me, I can get back to contrators when I get home from work. there website doesnt have any more useful info that you cant just google to find, and this guy Dave Lupberger is an expert he looks more like a guy who stands around on a job site and watches sub contractors work. have you seen there videos? what a joke the drywall patch never taken me that long to fix a hole in drywall. if you are someone looking for a contractor go somewhere else this place is all about money they will pressure you about other projects and if you dare mention anything you might be thinking about doing in the future they will either have a contractor call you or send you a reminder email every month. this company is all about how much money they can make and not about taking care of the customer. Dont be fooled by this greedy company.

I am a contractor for SM and i have been advertizing with them for acouple of months i own lumberjack tree experts and i have had good luck with them so far. if i get a lead and cant reach the coustmer after trying 2 times o well. i have yellow page adds and people call me to get estimates leaving me messages and i try to call them back sometimes its weeks before hear back from them.. so i just leave a detailed message for them and hope i get a call back sometimes messages get erased or people just forget. i get people all the time that say hey im glad you called i forgot to call or something else. but i dont pester someone also i dont leave a job till my coustmers are 100% satisfied. nobodys perfect but working to satify someone is a very hard job when so much comes into play. but if communication and agreement are met then you wont have a problem. i had another SM contractor bad mouth me because the price i gave a homeowner was $1200 less than him said i had no insurance and i dont know what im doing bla bla bla.all he did was hurt him self and his ratings average was 1 and a half stars over all. so thats something to look for i dont have to bad mouth someone there is plenty of tree work for all to do if anything we should work together. i won the job and did the job and they were very happy. there are always gonna be scamers and well to be blunt bullshiters.. so check out all you can about contractors i even encourage the homeowner to get more estimates tell them what to look for when getting an estimate. the word of mouth for my co. is great and thats how i want it to stay. when you tell someone something do it if it does not go as planed let them know. shit happens weather. your employees have problems cant make it to work. bla bla bla.. communicate.. work with them and do all you can to make them happy. im in bussiness to do what i can to help the people that need help and make money.ill addvertise with just about anyone why not.till they screw me. but remember this all that someone does will come around to them again might take time but it will. ive got over 90 thousand dollers owed to me from doing business over 16 years what can you do.. it cost more to collect. than to learn from it.. ive helped alot of people. i trusted them to pay me. and ive heard all the excuses in the world. if you could open a person and read them like a book you would not have a problem but you cant and you have to go with a gut feeling. and hell if you still know.but maybe after some reserch if will work for you in the best way posible. im sorry for yall getting screwed but look at this world. people are unpredictable.. sorry about the spelling im not good at that but i can cut the hell out of some trees. lol
Theres a lot more conversation out there from contractors about lead generation services. There is some content on HomePros.com about it.

I have used Service Magic three times to work of a house I own in another state. In all cases I have been extremely happy with the results. They have done good to excellent work, stayed within budget, and listened to me. All three told me they hoped I would rate them with a four or five star rating, as Service Magic would drop them if the got less. I gave each a well-deserved 5 star rating.

I am an electrical contractor in Seattle and I was turned onto servicemagic by a fellow contractor. I must say I don't get all the negative stuff about them. I get about 30 leads a month from them and about 75% actually turns into jobs. I do nearly $25,000 a month just with service magic leads. That's about $1,100 per lead. Sounds like people are blaming service magic for their own lack of sales ability to close the sale. Just my 2 cents.

Before you hire anyone recommended by Servicemagic, you should check out their background yourself. I used a contractor I found through Servicemagic and nearly had a lawsuit on my hands. Turns out he wasn't licensed, did work that did not meet local codes, made lots of promises that were never kept and often as not, did not show up when scheduled. A job that should have taken three days took three weeks, and I still have to hire someone else to fix a lot of mistakes. So much for Servicemagis's 10 point background check!

I have used ServiceMagic twice, once for a roofer and once for a sod installer. Both contractors were dishonest. The first lied about insurance (lied to us, SericeMagic and the insurance agent). The second tried to work more money out of us in the middle of the job by trying to claim he had underestimated the amount of sod needed. ServiceMagic provides no more service than eBay does. They match people up but take no real responsibility for the quality of the contractors. Avoid this service. Ask you neighbors for recommendations.

SERVICE MAGIC is not to be trusted in referring contractors, all they want is MONEY, every contractor has to pay them for each lead "and a lot" as long they pay SM... you are going to get that contractor whether hes is good or not. This is not a company that is friendly to the contractor nor the customer, just to them, and for them.

I have a half time employee position with good salary & benes, and am bored, but ok there. Just accepted a second half time position with good salary and no benes for a dynamic, young non-profit poised at the edge of growth - and I get to take it there!!! With an awesome board, of course.

This is definitely the professional challenge I've waited and prepped for, for quite some time now (like my whole career...). My hiring letter specifically states that the Board plans to work with me to make this a full time gig in the future - something I think we can do.

las vegas roofing
I have a choice of contractor or employee. Here are my thinking points & questions, and I would love some reflection. I'm also going to talk with some consultant friends about how they manage this, and probably a self-employment tax accountant.

1. I am concerned that my current position would be more in jeopardy if I take a second employee position, and that saying I am doing contract work in my off time would be accepted more. I think it would sound less threatening somehow to my current employer, as he also does some outside consulting.

2. I'll be working from home, and have heard - will confirm, but please inform me if you have info! - that the deductions for home based work is easier as a contractor. I am setting up in my weaving room until we can remodel my husband's unused art studio, which will take a few months.

3. Are self employment taxes a different bracket than if one is employed?

4. I live in an at-will state, so there is no inherent protection in being salaried vs. contract. I like the freedom as a contractor.

What else would be good for me to consider as I make this decision? I'd like to let the Board prez know by Monday. I am starting on 6 July, though have begun transition talks already, and had a welcome party thrown for me! Feels so nice...

Thanks!

I am new to developing internet sites and I was wondering if having
your site title related to your content really that critical?
I see your title, "Blogger: Home Contractor vs. Homeowner "
does appear to be spot on with what your
blog is about however, I prefer to keep my title less
content descriptive and based more around site branding. Would you think this is a
good idea or bad idea? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Generally speaking, customer feedback based improvements made
everything much easier to handle. With so many additional and better features in the canon 5d mark iii camera, it is not surprise that it is available at a much
higher price than the 5DMark III camera. According to Chung, the
Nikon has the edge for detail and for the addition of a crop mode while canon has the advantage
for lack of moire and high ISO performance.

streaming. You can set up biometric face unlock in
Settings -> Security -> Screen lock. If there were dual cameras
or a rear facing camera you could center things and get accurate photos.
